The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has issued a latest update on IS 302 Series, the primary safety standard applicable to household, commercial, and similar electrical appliances. As part of this update, BIS has extended the implementation timeline of the revised IS 302 series up to 23 February 2027, instead of the earlier deadline of 23 February 2026, providing additional transition time to the industry.
According to the notification released by BIS – Central Marks Department III (CMD-III), manufacturers are allowed to continue with the concurrent running of existing IS 302 standards and the revised IS 302 standards aligned with IEC 60335 during the transition period. This decision supports a smooth and practical transition to the updated safety requirements across different appliance categories.
This extension is particularly important for manufacturers, BIS license holders, and applicants, as IS 302 (Part 1) forms the base safety requirement under the BIS certification framework. Stakeholders are encouraged to use this extended period to review applicable standards, align testing and certification plans, and prepare for full compliance with the revised standards.
In this update, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has extended the implementation timeline for the revised IS 302 series of standards related to the safety of household, commercial, and similar electrical appliances.
The key change introduced through this notification is the extension of the concurrent running period for existing IS 302 standards and their revised versions. The revised deadline has been extended up to 23 February 2027, replacing the earlier implementation date of 23 February 2026.
This update allows manufacturers, BIS license holders, and applicants additional time to transition to the revised IS 302 standards aligned with IEC 60335, while continuing compliance under the BIS certification framework
The IS 302 series applies to a wide range of household, commercial, and similar electrical appliances operating on electricity. The scope includes, but is not limited to, the following product categories:

23 February 2027 → Revised Implementation Timeline
The Bureau of Indian Standards has confirmed that the concurrent running of existing and revised IS 302 standards will continue until 23 February 2027. Until this date, manufacturers and BIS license holders are permitted to comply with either the earlier IS standards or the revised IS 302 standards aligned with IEC 60335, as applicable to their products.
After 23 February 2027 → Post-Deadline Compliance Advisory
After 23 February 2027, only the revised IS 302 standards will be accepted for BIS certification, licensing, and ongoing compliance. Manufacturers, importers, and applicants are therefore advised to utilize the extended transition period to update product designs where required, complete testing as per revised standards, and ensure uninterrupted compliance under the BIS certification framework.
The BIS Quality Control Order (QCO) for electrical appliances has been introduced to ensure that household, commercial, and similar electrical appliances available in the Indian market meet essential safety requirements. Under this regulatory framework, compliance with applicable Indian Standards, including IS 302 (Part 1) and the relevant IS 302 Part 2 standards, becomes mandatory before products can be manufactured, imported, or sold in India.
IS 302 (Part 1) serves as the foundation safety standard under the BIS QCO, defining the general safety conditions that apply across different categories of electrical appliances. The QCO mechanism ensures uniform implementation of these standards, helping reduce safety risks, improve product reliability, and protect end users.
For manufacturers and importers, the BIS QCO means that product testing, certification, and ongoing compliance are no longer optional. With the extension of the implementation timeline for the revised IS 302 standards, stakeholders have been provided additional time to align their products with the updated safety requirements and prepare for full enforcement under the BIS Quality Control framework.
This update is based on the official circular issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) through the Central Marks Department–III (CMD-III), regarding the extension of the implementation timeline for the revised IS 302 series standards.
The notification has been approved by the Competent Authority and formally communicates the extension of the concurrent running period for existing and revised IS 302 standards applicable to household, commercial, and similar electrical appliances. Stakeholders are advised to carefully review the notification to understand the revised compliance timeline and regulatory obligations under the BIS Quality Control framework.
